To protect and revive such folk traditions, the Aswan troupe was created to reflect this great heritage. The troupe uses ancient musical instruments which accompany the various dances.
The troupe was basically formed of amateurs who participated in the weddings and celebrations that took place in the houses of friends and relatives.
The troupe started its performances in October 1975, with a number of folk dances representing various customs and traditions of the region. The troupe consists of 50 dancers accompanied by a number of musicians playing popular and folk music of the region.
From October to May the troupe gives its performances at the Aswan Cultural Palace.
Inaugural Dance:
A Selection of various items offered by the troupe based on popular and folkloric sources. The members introduce them- selves.
EL TAHTIP (stick-dance) & THE GHA W AZI (dancing gipsy girls)
In Upper Egypt, young people meet in open spaces before sunset. They stand in a circle with their sticks in hand and dance to the playing of the flute and the rabab. Young girls do not dance with young men here since the traditions of that region forbid it.
ARAGUID Dance
Araguid is a Nubian word meaning' 'the dance". It is .characterized by the harmony of voices of young men and women to the music of the doff. The dance was performed in old Nubia in the pre wed- ding night.

TATA Dance
TATA is Nubian word meaning "come on". TAT A is a famous song in the region sung by young men and women accompanied by a comic dance.

Karedj:
Means in Nubian language palm-leaf plates locally made by Nubian maidens. Such plates decorate the houses. Nubian girls weave them while singing and dancing under the palm trees of Aswan.
This dance is presented by young girls only.

In the region of Nubia there are various games played 'by boys and girls. ,the dance introduces some of these popular games.

The ZAFFA (WEDDING) Dance
This dance is modeled after the wedding ceremony in the Nubian society. It presents the night of Henna (Pre-wedding night). On this night, certain traditions are followed part of which is to smear the hands of the bride and bridegroom with Henna. The next day, the wedding itself takes place where bride and bridegroom dance amidst a large group of people

The dance of BECHARIEH
This dance presents the proposal of marriage in the Becharieh tribe which lives in the Eastern Desert lying between Aswan city and the Red Sea.
Dance of the hand "EL KAFF"
This defiance presents folk traditions of Upper Egypt in the region of north of Aswan. It is a very rhythmic dance showing the young dancers' dexterity in using their hands. A young girl with a veil on her face dances while each young man chooses the girl of his dreams to become his future wife.

This dance expresses aspects of the life of artisans at the Nubian market

The SEBOUE (First Week) dance:
In the folk traditions of the Nubia Region, a celebration of birth takes place on the first week after childbirth. in this celebration, the newborn is taken on a boat in the Nile at sunset to be initiated. This dance represents the ritual of child- birth and initiation.
Dance of "EL NAGRACHAD",
A Nubian dance consists of rhythmic beats on the "doff"(drum) accompanied by clapping of hands and tapping of feet presented by young boys and girls accompanied by Nubian Tim- bale, a Nubian musical instrument. This dance takes the form of a half-circle of young men while the centre young girls perform their rhythmic bouts. It is originally performed in the nights proceeding the nuptial night.
